Essay / Safety Risks of Products Made in China - 753
The United States receives more imports from China than any other country. In 2007, American companies recalled millions of products made in China because they posed safety risks. Products included toys, pet food, toothpaste and tires. There has been talk of the United States stopping all imports from China. Although there have been a multitude of recalls of products made in China due to safety risks, the United States should not stop importing from China. In 2007, one of the Chinese-made products that was recalled was children's toys. They were recalled because they caused lead in children. The toys contained contaminated paint containing excessive levels of lead. Immediately after hearing about lead, toy manufacturers like Fisher-Price and Mattel recalled millions of their products. Many American children have been affected by lead. Lawsuits were filed. Chinese manufacturers said the reason they used this paint was because it was a third of the price of safe paints. Additionally, toys were not the only products made in China to be recalled in 2007. In March 2007, there was also a large recall of pet food made in China. The pet food was contaminated with melamine. Melamine is an organic base and trimer of cyanamide and significant exposure can cause cancer or reproductive harm. Besides pet food, toothpaste was also recalled. Diethylene glycol has been found in toothpaste, which is a constituent of antifreeze. In addition, 450,000 Chinese-made light truck, sport utility vehicle and van tires were recalled. They were recalled because it was revealed that the Chinese manufacturer had stopped including a safety middle paper. States that trade with China are suggesting that the country stop importing only some products, but not all. It has been suggested that the United States continue to import products from China such as clothing, shoes and handbags, but stop importing toys, tires and pet food from company. Although some believe that the United States should stop importing products made in China due to security risks, there is very strong evidence that proves that the United States should not stop. In conclusion, the United States should not import products made in China because the country would lose money. In fact, the country would end up paying more for products if it manufactured them in the United States rather than buying them from China at a very low price. Stopping trade with China will also increase the country's debt..
