Essay / Twelve Angry Men by Reginald Rose - 709
In our society today, citizens play a vital role in the legal system by serving as a jury. A jury is a group of sworn people summoned to render an impartial verdict (a finding of fact on an issue) formally submitted to them by a court, or to determine a penalty or judgment (Wikipedia). 12 citizens are selected to serve as a jury in a particular trial. In the movie “12 Angry Men,” 12 ordinary citizens were called to serve on the jury in a case to decide the verdict of a murder trial. I choose these three jurors in my legal team based on their character and their contribution during the jury trial as depicted in the film. They are juror number one, Martin Balsam, juror eight, Henry Fonda (Davis), and juror 11, George Voskovec. Juror number one, Martin played a leadership role in directing their session. He was very firm but calm. He ensured that all jury members had the opportunity to exercise their rights during the daily deliberations. In the film, he never dominated his acclaimed role compared to his peers. He attempted to gain their approval through a democratic process by voting privately or publicly in the jury room. This is a necessary quality for jury leadership. He was a professional high school coach, and as such, he was able to use his leadership role to defend his program while maintaining sanity in the jury room. Even though he voted guilty at the beginning of the proceedings, he later changed his decision to not guilty after numerous facts and evidence were presented by his peers. For this reason, I chose him as a member of my legal team. The next person I would like to have on my legal team is juror number eight, Henry Fonda. He is a man of integrity, patient and calm, but he took his role in the jury process seriously... middle of paper ...... not guilty vote. When juror number seven, Jack Walden, decided to change his vote from guilty to not guilty because it was the popular vote, and as such he wanted the proceedings to end so he could go watch sports , George questioned his integrity. Juror number seven (George) reminded him of the privilege he has of being on the jury in such an important case. George asked Jack, "Do you vote not guilty because everyone else votes not guilty or do you vote not guilty because you think it's the right thing to do." »I really want him on my legal team because of his uncompromising attitude. In conclusion, as much as I would like to have jurors one, eight and 11 on my legal team, I believe that the "12 Angry Men" have portrayed various strengths and weaknesses that allowed their case in the legal process to succeed a murder triWorks CitedWikapaedia
