Essay / First Generation College Students Essay - 1163
An industry that once promoted equity and accessibility was now itself becoming an obstacle to overcome. “American universities are actually organized according to the cultural norms or rules of the game of the middle and upper classes and these norms effectively constitute an invisible academic disadvantage for first-generation students transitioning to college” (Stephens et. al, 2012). This proposed characteristic constitutes an almost uncontrollable and immutable disadvantage that students are unlikely to master. Institutions should serve as mediating platforms for students to start on an unbiased ground, where their talents, abilities and relationships are the only factors that can influence their success.
