  • Essay / Personal Statement: My Passion for Public Health

Throughout my undergraduate years, I worked with children from elementary school through high school and throughout my working years, I I realized that children were not aware of their own health and even less aware of health problems in the community. I received my associate's degree from Valencia College and then received my bachelor's degree from Florida Atlantic University. I majored in sociology because I wanted to understand how people work as individuals, in groups, and how the community as a whole functions. This would help me know how to integrate health into their daily lives more effectively. After receiving my bachelor's degree, I began working with a non-profit organization named ASPIRA where I worked as a youth counselor with at-risk youth. I noticed that their health knowledge was very minimal and by the time these children were teenagers it may have been too late. I believe health promotion and disease prevention starts at a young age. My passion is helping minority youth learn about their health in a way that they understand and would be able to maintain for the rest of their lives.
