He was born into poverty and was not born in the United States. When Hamilton was still young, his mother was imprisoned for being an unjust wife. When Hamilton's mother Rachel was released from prison, she ran away from Hamilton, his brother, and his father. Hamilton emigrated as a teenager to the British colonies in North America. In 1772, they sponsored his migration from India so that he could continue his studies. This provided Hamilton. He spent a year at New Jersey Preparatory School, then transferred to what is now Columbia University. Hamilton's leadership abilities prompted the state of New York to appoint him captain of the artillery company. While studying law, he qualified to become a lawyer and became a Continental tax collector for the state of New York.
