    The British had not left American territory in the Northwest. The British encouraged Native Americans to fight against the United States and also provided them with weapons. England was in the middle of the Napoleonic Wars with France. Even though the United States was neutral in the war, the British intercepted American ships and redirected them toward Britain and away from France. The British also kidnapped American sailors and forced them to serve in the Royal Navy. During the legislative elections of 1810, a new type of politician came to power. This new politician was younger, born after the American Revolution. They never experienced life as British settlers and had no loyalty to the British. They view the United States' relationship with England as a weakness and urge the United States to get rid of the British in Western American territory. This new generation of politicians were called the War Hawks. The War Hawks constantly pressured Madison to declare war on the British, and in June 1812, Madison relented. The United States was fighting to secure its Atlantic trade, to force the British out of American territory, and to drive out the Indians. Even though the British won the war, the Treaty of Ghent was signed on Christmas Eve 1814. The British agreed to a peace treaty because the war was becoming too costly for them to continue.
