When Jurgis and Ona arrive in Packingtown, Chicago Jurgis is big and strong and is chosen for a job every day, but after two years Jurgis is small and is chosen for almost no jobs. All the immigrants wait outside the meat factories to take jobs from people who don't show up or arrive late. Because there is no building code, the builders are deceiving the citizens of Packingtown by running the sewer directly under the house, the milk was also blue consisting of one third blue cans of farmathad, one third milk and one third water. Throughout the novel, Jurgis and Ona are Lithuanian immigrants who were mistreated, cheated on, and malnourished. Ona is forced to give birth in the attic of her own house because they can't afford to go to a real hospital. Dutch women were thought to be exceptional midwives, and one of Ona's neighbors was a Dutch woman named Madame Hau....
