Essay / Let's take a closer look at euthanasia - 1153
Euthanasia, coming from the Greek words "Eu" meaning good and "Thanatos" meaning death, designates the act of painlessly putting to death or allowing a person to die, such as by refusing extreme medical measures, a person or an animal suffering from an incurable disease or condition, particularly painful. Euthanasia may have a simple definition, but it is much more complex and highly controversial in the medical field where ethical viewpoints conflict. With today's advances in medical technology, we are able to save many people from infections and injuries and treat many illnesses. But there are still many diseases that are incurable or many of which are extremely painful and distressing for both the patient and their family. Why should these people die in such a painful way if they don't want to? There are two forms of euthanasia; one is active euthanasia, that is, an action that directly causes the death of a person; to many, this is known as “mercy killing.” The second is passive euthanasia, which involves allowing a person to die by not doing something that would prolong their life. This form of euthanasia is more widely accepted because the doctor gives nothing to the patient, the cause of death being the disease itself. But why not give a patient who has stopped treatment and is experiencing a painful death a life-ending drug if they ask for it? A person has the right to die as they wish, that is what autonomy is, the right to self-determination. Why should we prolong a gruesome death if we can make it quicker? In Diane's case, it is clear that she never wanted to undergo treatment for leukemia, which is acceptable as long as a doctor advises her to see if it is not just fear that is causing her i don't want... middle of paper... there is no other option and it is not another disease.Dr. Quill did the right thing by giving Diane sleeping pills, in a situation like his, being in control seems like such an important thing. And a feeling of happiness in an otherwise very depressing stage of life is essential for the patient and their family members. A doctor stops a treatment at the request of the patient because he knows that the treatment is not working so why prolong the suffering of the patient and his family members, why if it is acceptable for a doctor to stop the treatment knowing that the patient is going to die, it is It is not acceptable for him to give the patient pills that will give him a sense of control and allow him to die more peacefully. No doctor wants to see one of his patients die, but no human being can bear to see a person suffer knowing that he can easily stop the suffering and pain..
