Essay / Courage in To Kill A Mockingbird - 853
“I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of having the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you start, but you start anyway and you see it through no matter what. This goes very well with my essay and also with this story as a whole. The author sticks to the theme of courage throughout the book and shows a little of it in almost every person in the book. In the story To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee defines courage in Atticus, Jem, and Scout, and believes that courage is more than just being a good person to one's peers. The first person I'm going to talk about is Atticus Finch, and how he showed courage throughout the story. The first example is when Atticus fights for Tom Robinson during the trial. When Scout asks him, “Atticus, are we going to win?” and Atticus responds, "No, darling" (76), he shows courage because even though he knows he's going to lose the case, Atticus still fights for Tom because he's a good friend of his, and he also wanted to fight for someone Atticus knew was innocent. He shows courage because he knows that other residents of Maycomb may not agree or like him as much because he is fighting for a black man, but he does it anyway . My second example is when Atticus tells the children that "Mrs. Dubose was a great lady" (112), even though Mrs. Dubose really wasn't respectful to Atticus at all. Atticus says "she had her own view of things, very different from mine." This shows that he understands that people can be different and that he has the courage to be himself, to have his own opinions and to share them with other people. My third example is when Atticus says, "If you just learn one trick, Scout, you'll do a lot better with it...... middle of paper...... accept that, Jem too." read to Mrs. Dubose as she asked. When Jem tells Atticus, "I cleaned it for her and said I was sorry, but I'm not, and that I would work on it every Saturday and try to get them to grow back » (105), this shows that Jem doesn't like the work he has to do, but he still does it just to make his father happy. Jem is brave in this chapter because he tries his best to make Atticus happy, even if he doesn't agree with him. In this story, Harper Lee portrays courage throughout this story by showing it through each of the characters, all of whom have different ways of doing it. demonstrate bravery and courage towards their peers. Between Atticus, Jem, and Scout, they all show many examples throughout the book. Courage is a good thing to have in life, and it will help you get through tough times, like it helped these characters in the book..
