Essay / The important message in the play Rosencrantz and...
What makes a film or play important? The messages of course; no text will ever be left without messages interwoven into the storyline. Tom Stoppard perfectly masters this technique which is reflected throughout his play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. It is a play about two gentlemen from the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Stoppard writes this play expecting readers to be extremely familiar with the play Hamlet; parts of the play are even performed in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead. However, this is a play about two walking dead people; Readers who are familiar with the play Hamlet know that these two men will die at the end of the play. This is a play where everything is metaphor, message or theme, some of which refer to Hamlet, others of which refer to other things throughout the story. Specific messages appear throughout Tom Stoppard's play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, which include the use of language, the question of identity, and finally the uncertainties of life and death. Initially, the use of language is an important message in Rosencrantz. and Guildenstern are dead. Language is something we use all the time. We talk, text, and write words to give or receive information. However, words have different meanings and representations. For example, when someone speaks English, they say English words that are only understandable to people who speak English, but if you say English words to someone who only speaks Spanish or Korean, they will not understand what these words are supposed to mean. In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, words are fumbled and played with. For clarity, the word "what" is used several times, but it is played with and represents different meanings. T...... middle of paper... it never stops, it's when we die. Still, according to the play, is it worth staying on the boat? Many messages are revealed throughout Tom Stoppard's play, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, including the use of language, the question of identity, and the uncertainties of life and death. The use of language throughout the play is remarkable and the basic words have many different meanings or representations. Additionally, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, or Guildenstern and Rosencrantz, are always confused, showing that no one knows who they are and this causes them to question their identity. Finally, both life and death have many uncertainties and we can never be sure of anything. We don't know if the life we live is real or if it's just a dream and we don't know what happens after death. Yet these are just a few messages in a piece that contains thousands of metaphors.
