With high gas prices continuing to rise, it may be time to switch to a different type of fuel for your vehicle. Perhaps E85 could be the answer. E85 is eighty-five percent denatured ethanol and fifteen percent gasoline. This blend of ethanol and gasoline is less expensive while offering a higher octane level than conventional gasoline and will reduce dependence on foreign oil while boosting the U.S. economy. E85 has been slow to catch on in the states due to our dependence on foreign oil. In 1970 we imported 24% of our oil, today we import 70% and this figure continues to grow. Prices fluctuate, which is generally beyond the consumer's control. Gas prices from July 2007 to July 2008 increased from $3.01 to $4.11, an increase of 37%. (Administration of Economics and Statistics) During this period, consumers reduced their gasoline purchases by only 7%, at a time when the economy was slowing. For every 10 cents increase in the price of gasoline, the average household loses $7 per month. (Administration of Economics and Statistics) This amount of 7 dollars per month has not slowed down the purchase of gasoline too much, but the distance that a household travels in a month for work, school and necessary shopping. When fossil fuels run out, there will be only coal left in the world. (Perera, Frederica P. 987-990) According to the new modified Klass model, it shows the lifespan of the world's fossil fuels. By 2040, oil will have been completely exhausted, leaving only coal. (Shahriar, Shafiee, Erkan Topal 181-189) When oil runs out, there are very few ways to run an automobile without oil. Electricity is an option but poses problems: fully recharging the vehicle can take 10 to 12 hours.
