Essay / Fears in the Most Dangerous Game - 1002
Fears in the Most Dangerous Game [ADM1]Everything around was calm. [ADM2]The birds were chirping and the leaves were blowing. Suddenly, a man ran out of the bushes, holding only a knife in his right hand. After the fleeing man had walked some distance, another man emerged from the brush, holding a revolver. This man calmly walked after the fleeing man, without fearing that he would escape. The straight old man stopped and loaded his revolver. He then took aim, fired one bullet and hit the fleeing man as he turned around. The man fell and died instantly. The old man then walked towards the game he had just killed, grabbed the body by the shirt and dragged it into the brush. Richard Connell's Most Dangerous Game is a story based on a man who enjoys hunting humans [ADM3]. The way Connell wrote this short story reveals certain characteristics of him. The Most Dangerous Game is a psychological story in which the author faces and overcomes fear.[ADM4]The general's eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch to the tree. Rainsford froze there, all his muscles tense like a spring. But the hunter's keen eyes stopped before they reached the branch where Rainsford lay; a smile spread across his brown face. This story is filled with the same type of fear that Connell experienced in his life. Maybe he felt “hunted” at some point in his life and decided he needed to run away from all the pain and anger. For example, his father may have been abusive towards him, so he decided to run away from the fear of being hurt emotionally and physically[ADM5]. Rainsford slipped from the bottom of the tree and went back into the woods... Following the trail with the sureness of a bloodhound arrived General Zaroff. Connell ran, ran, ran, but no matter how far he ran, his fears were always behind him. Connell would soon figure out what to do.[ADM6]Connell also showed the ability to overcome his fears. At the end of the story, Rainsford confronts Zaroff in Zaroff's own room. Zaroff proposes a truce, but Rainsford does not accept it and they fight to the death. Rainsford had managed to confront Zaroff, his fear.[ADM7] Connell shows that he overcame the fears he had in his life by facing them with confidence..
