    The American woman and her soldiers fought bravely in countless wars. The freedom gained through these wars gave and took the rights of American citizens. With these freedoms, the American people have the freedom to express themselves, to stand up for what they believe in, and the right to protect those freedoms. To help protect and limit the freedoms of American citizens, the United States government has laws in place that its citizens must follow. However, has society begun to establish its own law according to the majority worldview, and have these overly clouded worldviews begun to subjugate the voices of other groups? Society, through these social “laws,” has begun to contradict what they allow and what they do not allow people to say; and some of their social laws began to prevent certain groups from expressing themselves. Social “laws” do indeed set good boundaries that need to be protected, but society has begun to impose social laws that violate or contradict other free speech laws. Although the Constitution grants all Americans freedom of speech, free speech requires social limits. Double standards for free speech have changed over time. Historically, society considered slavery acceptable. American society viewed Africans as property and treated them as such. Some people viewed the treatment of Africans as wrong, and although society tried to suppress their voices, they spoke out. Harriet Beecher Stowe played a major role in this when she published her anti-slavery novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, in 1852. Through her story of Simon Legree and Uncle Tom, she exposed the horrors of slavery. His story finally brought awareness to an issue in society and how they view Africans.
