Study Abroad The term study abroad refers to a person who intends to acquire knowledge outside the confines of his or her country. Studying abroad is an effective way to fulfill your college degree requirements and travel the world while experiencing new cultures. There are many aspects of studying abroad. You must be prepared: it's fun and exciting, but you must be careful of the dangers. Many students choose to study abroad because of the potential benefits. Some students want to learn a second language and think it would be better and more interesting for them to learn it in their home country. Some students choose to study abroad to experience cultures firsthand rather than through a textbook. Some people simply see it as a chance to travel (What are your reasons, what are your goals?, 1995). Statistically, just over 100,000 American college students spend one or more semesters studying abroad each year (Institute for International Education, 1998). When we talk about studying abroad, we often emphasize preparation. How to prepare, what to bring, etc. are listed on websites such as the U.S. government's study abroad site. You need to prepare by thoroughly familiarizing yourself with the country you are visiting. You can prepare by reading books, looking at magazines, and researching online. You need to know their customs and if possible know their language, or at least key phrases. Reading and learning their customs will also help ease the culture shock when you arrive (Cohen, 67).
