  • Essay / Arguments for Dualist Theories - 1214

Even though there are many cases and arguments for dualism regarding mind and body, such as Descartes' substance dualism, the theory often lacks evidence concrete physics to support such a premise as science. do. Continuing scientific advances over the past centuries have allowed us to better understand universal truths and functions of the body-mind that could not be explained scientifically in the past. Many complex and unexplained complexities have been simplified or “reduced” through chemistry, biology or physics. Through the comparison of arguments supporting dualist theories and counter-arguments, I will prove that dualism is a concept of the past and that continued scientific progress is inevitable and will one day allow us to understand many dualist explanations with hard evidence and scientists that we have. has not succeeded in the past. One of the major dualist theories, and one of the first proposed, was that of Descartes' interactive substance dualism. This is the view that the mind and body are separate entities – whereas the brain is part of the body, which is purely physical; our mind is a mental substance that is an extension of the body – a separate entity. When a person feels pain, for example, the body experiences certain chemical and electrical stimuli (physical properties), causing the self/soul to consciously experience the felt quality and awareness of the pain (mental property) . Within the framework of substance dualism, it is often asserted that the soul and the brain interact closely with each other, despite being different substances with different properties. For dualists, including both substance and physical, it seems obvious that physical properties do not have mental characteristics...... middle of paper ...... progress is inevitable. As we move into the future, it is certain that scientific advances will continue to advance and allow us to better understand how our bodies and minds interact. We are not simply trying to argue for reasonless science instead of theories like dualism, but the underlying reasoning is that dualism and other related theories often lack concrete physical evidence to support such assertions or main points of the theory. They are simply outdated in terms of scientific explanations, and while many proponents still exist today, in some cases they are forced to rely on faith due to a lack of concrete material evidence. Even though there are many aspects that science has not been able to explain, we hope to one day gain knowledge through science and, with time, explain the complexities and universal truth that still exist today..
