Essay / Death - 1207
Two different views on deathDeath can be represented in many ways. Emily Dickinson's view of death is a calm and accepting portrayal. Wallace Stephens' view of death represents a celebration. Death can be a time of acceptance or rejection. I chose to compare the differences on the theme of death between Emily Dickinson's poem, Because I Couldn't stop for Death, and Wallace Stevens' poem, The Emperor of Ice-Cream. Emily Dickinson's poem was written from the perspective of a woman grappling with the idea of her own death. Wallace Stevens' poem was written from the narrator's perspective describing the events surrounding a wake upon the death of a neighbor. We can assume that Dickinson is explaining her thoughts about her own death and Stevens is explaining the death about a woman the reader does not know and who is never referred to by name. Dickinson's style in this poem is very structured and precise, as is her point of view. of death. There are six stanzas in the poem, with each stanza having four lines or quatrains. It's amazing how much effort she took to make each quatrain similar. The first and third lines have eight syllables and the second and fourth lines have six syllables. The first syllable is unstressed, followed by a stressed syllable that follows throughout the poem. Wallace Stevens' poem has two eight-line stanzas, but the meter of the poem varies. The syllables vary and do not follow a strict structure like Dickinson does. Stevens has two rhymes in the last two lines of each stanza. The characters in each poem represent different things. In Because I Couldn't Stop to Die, death is represented by the carriage driver. The narrator is the woman in the poem and the children represent...... middle of paper...... could be interpreted as mute or it could mean she looks stupid lying on the exposed table. In line seven, “let the lamp fix its beam” (15) could mean that light is life. The main theme of this poem is that life is short. Live while you are alive, because no one cares after you die. This suggests that the author does not believe in life after death. After examining both poems, we can say that our beliefs about death may vary. Should we accept death as inevitable and believe that there is life after death or should we live for today and not worry about life after death? The two authors view death differently. Emily Dickinson's poem, Because I Couldn't Stop Because Death Approaches Death with Respect and Calmness. Wallace Stevens' poem, The Ice Cream Emperor addresses death with a lack of respect for the dead and a moment of celebration.
