Essay / The concept of culture in consulting - 1541
The concept of culture in consultingCulture can be defined in a broad and narrow context. The broad definition includes demographic variables (age, gender), status variables (social, educational, economic) and affiliations (formal and informal), as well as ethnographic variables, such as ethnicity, nationality and language. A narrow definition of culture is limited to the terms ethnicity and nationality, which are important to individual and family identity, but the concept of culture in counseling generally transcends national and ethnic boundaries. It interprets culture in a broader sense, it aims to go beyond its most obvious and verifiable symbols towards the more subjective perspectives of its members. Counseling deals with the subjective aspect of culture, which refers to the internalized feelings, attitudes, opinions and assumptions of members of a particular culture, as well as the objective, which involves visible aspects, which are culturally adopted and determined and can be identified both by people inside and outside a given culture. There are, however, different perspectives that emphasize various aspects of culture and attempt to identify its limitations and substitutes. Some view culture as a separate entity from demographic factors, some point to acculturation as one of the barriers that makes culture difficult to identify, some show how to establish an intimate and meaningful relationship between a counselor and a culturally different client . In this essay, I will discuss the different concepts of understanding culture in consulting, examining different authors and perspectives and evaluating their strengths and weaknesses.
