In today's modern times, most of society will follow the newest movement. Many people like to be part of the majority, very few people try to stand out and express their own opinion on the subject. So, like in real life, in The Scarlet Letter Written, a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne, many residents of the town of Salem end up with the majority of the town and bring shame to Hester's name. Although many young women feel sorry for Hester, no one tries to defend her. Even though Hester goes through many difficulties because of the sins she has committed, society slowly changes for the better throughout the story. At the beginning of the novel, Hester is placed on the scaffold to speak publicly about her sins to the city. . As Hester walks to the scaffold, a group of older women speak ill of her as they think she is almost bragging about her sin, saying, "Can a woman, in front of this shameless rascal , ever found such a way to show it? ?"
