In today's economy, where the unemployment rate is significantly higher than normal compared to previous years, people are demanding solutions from their government leaders . The Obama administration planned to create more jobs, but nothing came of it. Currently, as Congress once again heads toward gridlock, the Republican House Speaker and House Majority Leader have proposed to President Obama that he include a plan called "Georgia Works" in his latest proposal to Congress. The program would make it possible to find temporary jobs at no cost to employers. These individuals would also receive job training while receiving unemployment compensation or a government stipend in hopes of eventually being hired for full-time employment (Calmes). In his State of the Union address, the president included the plan, but it raises the question of government reach. Should it be the responsibility of the federal government to create programs that will keep Americans employed until they find suitable employment? The United States was in recession from December 2007 to June 2009, according to the National Bureau of Economic Research (National). At that time, the unemployment rate was between 5% and 9.5% (work). What's confusing to many Americans is that even though they are told the economy is growing and the recession is over, the unemployment rate remains quite high. In fact, just four months after the recession “ended,” in October 2009, the unemployment rate peaked at 10.1%. It has declined steadily over the past two years to reach its current level of 9.0%.
