  • Essay / Three Waves of Feminism - 1364

The period of the first wave extends from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of the 20th century. This wave was centered on the fight for women's right to vote. It all started with the Seneca Falls Convention held in Seneca Falls, New York in July 1848. The women's rights and abolition movements are very convoluted. Elizabeth Cady Stanton is considered one of the first women's rights activists. She was a vital part of the women's suffrage movement (DeFonza). In successfully leading the drafting of the Declaration of Sentiments, the Convention together formulated "the first formal demand for women's suffrage in America" (MacNamara). The first wave saw success in voting rights across borders, including in the UK, the Netherlands and Europe.
