The main technique used in the poem is contrast, along with other techniques. Which makes the young man's fate even more pitiful. The use of irony, word choice, and powerful imagery all create a sense of atmosphere in each stanza. Contrast in mood and tone is used in the first and second stanza, which creates a change in mood. In the first stanza, words like “horrible” and phrases like “sad as a hymn” are used by Owen to create a dull and depressing mood. Which represents the man's current life he is stuck in. Then, in the second stanza, words like “gay” are used to create a very happy and joyful mood. Which represents the man's past life, before the injury. The contrast is also linked to the irony of the poem. First, before his injury, all the girls loved him and were fighting to get their hands on him.
