Essay / Race Relations in America - 733
Even though many positive events have occurred in race relations in America, there are still issues that must be examined and resolved before there can be a true understanding and appreciation between races. Although some measures appear to simulate peaceful relations between the races, they have only delayed the current problems. As our constitution states that all are created equal, we are obligated to interact directly with our racial counterparts and not remain “separate but equal.” In America, only half-measures have actually been taken to truly repair the vestiges of slavery and segregation between African-Americans and Caucasian-Americans; however, our nation is a multicultural mutt. Working half-heartedly to improve relations between two races has extended the time needed to have truly harmonious race relations. Coming from the South, which has a rich history of racial interactions, I personally witness efforts to improve interactions between whites and blacks. However, I still notice that racial tensions persist not only between whites and blacks, but also between many others. races that came to this region. While efforts have been made to ease racial tensions between whites and blacks, I believe that these measures taken only between these two races cause racial tension between other groups, due to neglect. Although there are many races, when efforts to ease relations between whites and blacks are undertaken, many racial groups can be grouped under these labels alone. This caused internal problems within the group. In my life, I have observed these problems firsthand. At Bridge Builder, a program that attempts to "build bridges" between races, I was put under the vague label of White, and...... middle of paper ......f on 11 September attacks. Therefore, every time the mere mention of the Middle East conflict comes up in conversation, there is a return to the September 11 attacks and a return to a discussion of who is to blame. It is as if the attackers' conflict had never been resolved. Although our society today tends to neglect certain racial groups by lumping them together under labels such as Black and White, our society has nevertheless improved its race relations enormously since the past. . Coming from a country in which it was normal to think that one race was superior to another; America has certainly equalized opportunities for white and black megagroups. On the other hand, however, while our country has become more multicultural over the years since this equality between whites and blacks, we have not taken appropriate steps to truly provide equality of opportunity to these new racial groups..
