This undeniably describes what a mother should be. However, in David's case, his mother does not exhibit any of these characteristics towards him. In fact, she has absolutely no relationship with him. David begins to realize that his mother, Emily, is not very "motherly." Three other characters in the novel who are mother figures to David are Mrs. Wender, Uncle Axle, and Rosalind. These characters fulfilled the role of his mother in many ways. First, Mrs. Wender is an exceptional mother figure to David because she is able to show him affection that he does not receive from his mother. When David was at the Wenders' house before they left, Mrs. Wenders had given David a hug. From David's antiphon, he was obviously not used to such an expression of feeling from his mother. I find this extremely scandalous because a hug from a mother is confirmation to the person receiving the hug that they have someone who does.....
