Essay / All Black Everything - 1978
The first thing some people feel when they think of the color black is a feeling of emptiness. Others associate dual meanings with it because it can be seen as a void or as something all-encompassing. Black has a special meaning for me. The main thing that comes to mind when I think of black is curiosity. This raises questions about the notions that underlie the way so many people use it. This has been the subject of perceptions and much propaganda. This is also directly linked to stereotypes between ethnicities. Since its prevalence in my early childhood, in modern society and even in the work of notable artists, I have learned to associate black with blur. I saw the color as a symbol of many unresolved issues. My father taught me well-known facts of black history earlier in my life. When I was 8 years old, you could have asked me who was one of the most influential people in the emergence of free agency in sports, and I wouldn't have said Michael Jordan. Instead, I would have told you about a guy named Curt Flood, who played for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1960s. I knew who Paul Robeson was: an African-American in various legal professions , sport, theater and singing. I could even tell you that his nickname was My father's intentions were for me to learn about my past in order to have a vision for the future. With the exception of Savannah College of Art and Design, my school consisted of private institutions with students who were all Arfican Americans. I went from a Lutheran elementary school with all-black teachers to a predominantly white Catholic high school and a historically black university with a racially diverse faculty.
