Essay / The Fault in Our Stars by John Green - 629
Hans Urs von Balthasar, a Swiss theologian and priest, expressed it best when he said: “What you are is a gift from God to you, what you become is your gift to God." Since the first prophets, messengers of the Lord, God created concepts of Catholic life according to the word of God, they have become innate in our daily life. With these concepts we learn to live our lives as better Catholics while striving to show God what type of people we are based on our actions These ideas challenge use to improve our lives and society Students study two main concepts in the. course In Search of the Good: Human Dignity and the Just Person Our sense of dignity is affirmed when our uniqueness is valued by those around us as we all become citizens of the world Additionally, the idea of the just person. means seeking and applying justice truthfully. Therefore, both ideas, namely human dignity and the righteous person, are linked to the novel The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, because of their theme of identity and the common good. To begin with, the Catholic concept of human dignity is present in the novel Our Faulty Stars, through its use of identity. In the Catholic perspective, “the elect live “in Christ,” but they retain, or rather rediscover, their true identity, their own name” (CCC 1025). In the novel, while Augustus is talking to Hazel, he says, “Don't tell me you're one of those people who becomes their illness” (Green 32). This proves that Augustus has already found his true identity because he despises people "who become their illness", he does not let cancer define who he is. Furthermore, many followers of Christ, "Identity is a person's distinctive character, and it is determined by morality...... middle of paper ......el to achieve one's goal more easily proves that the Catholic concept of the righteous person is present in Our Faulty Stars. In conclusion, because of the theme of identity and the common good, the novel Our Faulty Stars connects to Catholic concepts of human dignity and the righteous person. First, the character of Augustus Waters exhibits the theme of identity as he has already found his own name by not identifying with his illness and understands that a person's character determines their identity. Additionally, the character of Doctor Maria strongly contributes to the theme of the common good by respecting Hazel Grace's fundamental and inalienable rights, and helps Hazel more easily achieve her fulfillment, which is to meet her hero. As we fully learn to understand each Catholic concept, we grow as Catholics and become better people as we spread God's loving word..
