Essay / Mozart's Opera Aria, Dove Sono I Bei Momenti and...
Neither work uses pure sound as they both mix the fundamental tone with harmonics to produce a particular sound. “Dove sono i bei momenti” combines the fundamental tone and harmonics, resulting in a clear pitch and pleasant timbre. Conversely, "Live 1988" uses electronic tonal modification using sound effects such as machine noises and glass breaking. The combination of tones in “Live 1988” results in a sound with unpleasant and indistinct pitches. This makes “Dove sono i bei momenti” sound soft and “Live 1988” sound harsh. My first reaction to “Dove sono i bei momenti” was a sad and depressing feeling. However, the visual and audio aspects later in the performance were calming and entertaining. The artist seemed calm and his movements on stage were in rhythm with the music. “Live 1988” was the most intriguing noise music show I have ever seen. I initially thought this performance was an excerpt from a violent movie scene, but the consistency of the performance made me realize that it was actually a performance to illustrate exactly this music.
