  • Essay / Documentary: Hungry For Change - 1698

Hungry for Change is a thought-provoking documentary produced by James Colquhoun and Laurentine ten Bosch that explores the implications of a modern diet. Using pathos, facts, figures and associations, Hungry for Change delivers a meritorious performance that engages viewers and makes them question their own diet and lifestyle choices. The film's use of rhetorical and publicity strategies and its ability to captivate viewers make it an effective, life-changing documentary. As obesity and diet-related medical problems become a larger problem within society, it is imperative to educate humans on the importance of maintaining a healthy diet. This is exactly what Hungry for Change does. One of the key points of the documentary is that humans no longer have a natural diet like their ancestors did; When humans first inhabited Earth, they lived on a diet of fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and meats. During these periods, famine and disease were rampant, so humans adapted to store food more productively. Now that humans live in a more developed society, they have a (virtually) unlimited supply of food. However, a lot of these foods are processed and manipulated to have better flavor and a longer shelf life, and while this seems like a positive situation, it has become a huge problem. According to bestselling author Dr. Christine Northrup, a bestselling author on women's health, “We have lived on Earth for a millennium where there was a food shortage. You are programmed to gain weight whenever there is food available. There is now a lot of food available, but it is not the right kind.” (Northrup, cited in Colquhoun et al., 2012). This is a logical and widely accepted theory as to why humans continue to overindulge in foods despite the middle of the article. The use of pathos, facts and figures, and associations persuade and motivate audiences everywhere. ages to change their lifestyle habits and prove that Hungry for Change is an effective and inspiring documentary.
