Essay / Successful and unsuccessful compromises in the United States...
Throughout the years 1774 to 1877, the United States experienced numerous compromises, successful and unsuccessful. An example of a successful economic compromise is the three-fifths compromise; political is the Constitution of the United States of America; and an example of social is the Dred Scott trial. The economy of the 1700s was crucial to success. At that time, many people depended on slave labor for their money. When it came to taxes, both the North and the South had to pay slave taxes. This caused many problems for the North and eventually the Three-Fifths Compromise was created. This meant that the South would pay extra for their slaves, but they would not count as a full person, they would count as 3/5ths of a person. It was successful because it made the North somewhat happy and the South because it focused on slavery for a few years. A young professor named Thomas R. Dew defended slavery in 1831. He said, “Do not these simple statistics speak volumes on the subject? It is seriously recommended that the State of Virginia abandon its slaves. In other words, Virginia would have to sacrifice half of its total value! » Some may dispute the success of the compromises, but it was not successful. He only defends slavery because he is pro-slavery, he is a slave owner himself; so it's not even like he's looking at the opinions of anti-slavery people. This doesn't count as a compromise because no compromise was even made. The Bill of Rights, which gave people their rights, was a successful political compromise. This success is due to the fact that he did not focus only on the North or only on the South; it focused on the people of the United States and on individual rights and freedom...... middle of paper ...... "appeals to both conscience and love of character , or to our slave owners.” The Missouri Compromise of 1820 organized a line aimed at largely dividing the free and slave states. This was successful because the states below the line were slaves and the states above the line were free. Abraham Lincoln, a well-known president, was elected just before the Civil War and all he wanted was peace. He himself said: “Without malice towards anyone, with charity for all”. He means that always having this desire to do nothing good, there will always be evil between the North and the South. If none of these compromises had happened in the 1700s and 1800s, what would life be like today? Besides, if none of what was happening, whether economic, political, or social, happened, who knows what everything we know today would be like? The United States has been very successful at compromising over the years..
