Essay / Pornography: an examination of the harms, problems and their impact...
Bennett 4This review will briefly examine the various harms of pornography, particularly since the advent of Internet pornography. Over the past few decades, research has increasingly shown that pornography has negative effects on both men and women. Both women and men have been affected by the wide-ranging addictive habits of porn. This review will also look at solutions to addictive pornography. Consumption of pornography has increased significantly in recent decades, primarily due to the advent and popularity of regular, affordable, high-speed Internet connections (Eberstadt & Layden 13; "The History of Modern Pornography."). Although pornography has been around for thousands of years, it has never been more used or abused (8). The vivid and explicit images of porn distort healthy perceptions of sexuality, causing the loss of true intimacy amid a desensitized sexual libido (Struthers 1; “What's Wrong with Pornography?” 1 Dubinsky 1; Pornography as defined by the United Methodist Church promotes “violence, abuse, coercion, domination, humiliation, or degradation for the purpose of arousal,” all of which are obvious negative aspects (1). Pornography has been linked to higher divorce rates, sexual violence, sex trafficking, chemical changes in the brain, and relationship problems. Pornography affects both church culture and society as a whole. These wide-ranging issues require high-impact changes that new regulations can make. Strict regulations will be a palliative to the national epidemic in its tracks. Over the past few decades, pornography has been an activity that has required serious effort and discretion. Often, magazines or other media were concealed in black bags to protect privacy and comfort...... middle of paper ...... at the bottom of the storeroom at the root. In terms of demand, educational campaigns, both Christian and secular, can help curb the destructive use of pornography. Social justice and change are never easy and are often unpopular and, as history shows, even violent. In order to change pornography's grip on society, real discussion, real education and real regulation must be implemented. The Church has an enormous responsibility to create an open atmosphere for men and women, whether consumers or victims, to be open to the harms of pornography in their own lives. A Christian support group focused on sexual integrity, purity, and recovery will go a long way toward reducing the harms of pornography. While some may disagree with fighting pornography based on moral or philosophical logic, the evidence is very overwhelming that pornography has an impact and is generally negative for everyone involved..
