    Martin Luther King, he was a great man with a noble goal, that of promoting the rights of African Americans in the United States at a time when many were opposed to them and where it was a very controversial subject. . It was so controversial that MLK was thrown in jail 29 times, but when he was incarcerated in the Birmingham Jail for his nonviolent protests in the city, he wrote a letter that we are still analyzing for its use today rhetorical strategies. His "Letter from Birmingham Jail" was a response to Birmingham clergymen protesting his "imprudent and untimely" action. In his letter, Martin Luther King Jr. uses rhetorical strategies such as tone, diction, and analogies to effectively express why he is in Birmingham and why he will help anyone in need. To understand what strategies he used and why we must first determine what demographic he is targeting. The audience is mostly white, religious men who oppose what MLK is doing in Birmingham. We know this because in part of his speech he refers to religion and that he is "like Paul" and spreads the word of freedom. ...
