  • Essay / How to make a moral choice? - 1499

Aborting is a moral choice. Mary Gordan's essay "A Moral Choice" addresses many issues regarding abortion, with the author clearly being pro-choice. The debate over when a fetus is alive (437) focuses on when it is acceptable to have an abortion. As well as the morality of abortion judged in the media, religion, society and by oneself. Women who have abortions are criticized as cold and technological (441). These normal, everyday women have been making this moral decision for centuries. Although society should be realistic, our world is overpopulated and some women are not designed to have children. How do women make this moral decision? Many circumstances influence the decision to abort or not. Gordan tells a few scenarios about why women choose to have an abortion. One example concerns a “yuppie” woman (437) who would not miss her vacation or her job promotion as a reason to have an abortion. She also illustrates the scene of a teenage “ghetto girl” (437) who cannot say no to sex as one of the circumstances that results in an abortion. As well as telling the stories of women who feel they can no longer afford to have more children. Finally, she recounts the cases of women whose husbands or boyfriends convince them to have an abortion so that their lifestyle is not affected. These scenarios serve as concrete reasoning for his statements: “…abortion does not happen in a vacuum” (437) and “It is linked to other choices a woman makes during her adult life” (437 ). In short, it narrates the concept that women choose to abort due to circumstances congruent with the pregnancy. Gordan then continues to debate the concept of when the fetus...... middle of paper...... makes moral decisions every day. These decisions are something we have to live with. We need to be able to wake up every morning and look in the mirror. I side with the pro-choice movement because the name suggests, each person must make their own choice.
