  • Essay / Speech of a Speech Therapist - 1733

I am currently a freshman at Oklahoma State University, majoring in Communication Sciences and Disorders. I plan to graduate with my bachelor's degree in May 2019 and then pursue a master's degree and certification in speech-language pathology. With this diploma, I aspire to work as a speech therapist in a retirement home. Before working on the service-learning project component of this course, I had no experience working with people with disabilities. Through the Service Learning Project, I had the opportunity to volunteer in two programs that work with adults with disabilities. I volunteered at an adult education course program that provides adults with disabilities with basic adult education. The second program was the Faith Class, which is a Sunday school class for adults with disabilities. These classes were made up of around fifteen adults of all ages and with different disabilities. Each volunteer who came to class was assigned a student to work with. Each time I have participated, I have worked with a young woman who had an intellectual delay as well as an orthopedic disability. At the start of each lesson, students had work on the board that they had to copy and answer in their notebooks. The board work required students to write the entire date and answer a question related to the day's lesson. I helped my student complete this assignment by writing the work on the board on a piece of paper in front of her while she wrote. This helped her see how the letters were formed, so she could write them correctly in her notebook. The woman... middle of paper ...... individuals in the faith class, I learned to practice the popular language first in my daily life. I often see many members of the class working in the student union. I stop and talk to them, as I would with friends I have classes with. with. I don't view the students in the class as disabled people who I teach, but I see them as my friends who help me grow stronger in my faith every day. Even though the service learning project is over, I will continue to volunteer in the Faith Sunday School class every Sunday this semester. I'm already dreading going home for summer vacation, because I want people to see the members of Faith Class every Sunday. The Service Learning Project changed the way I view people with disabilities and I think everyone should volunteer with people with disabilities to gain more experience with People First Language..
