People can change their habits over time in positive ways. Everyone has experienced change once in their life. Some people have recognized changes during their lives in positive or negative ways. Throughout the novel “The First Stone” by Don Aker, the main character Reef changes his habits in very positive ways. Reef is a teenager who changes his lifestyle and makes a huge impact in his life after meeting Leeza. This novel expands on the fact that people can change in beneficial ways, regardless of the situation they find themselves in. Reef develops the ability to care for others throughout the book when he goes to see Jink in the hospital. In this part of the novel, Reef showed deep and genuine sadness at seeing his friend in such a vulnerable state. Not only that, but he cared about Scar because she was also grieving with him. “Reef took his hand and shook it…. They both tried to force a smile, but couldn't. (Aker 243) This showed that Reef really cared about Jink because he couldn't find a way to smile. When people mourn something that happened to their loved ones, they usually really care....
