Essay / Parent Involvement is a Teacher's Main Goal
On March 5, 2014 I sat down with Teacher #1 and we discussed her 30+ year teaching career of teaching. Currently working as a teacher with 3-4 year olds has given her experience managing diversity and communicating with parents. She is a graduate of Mercyhurst University and has a lot of experience involving parents in her classroom as a primary focus of her class. As we spoke, she told me about her many ways of building a relationship with her family, including writing a classroom newsletter, center newsletters, invitations, greetings, and teacher conferences. . In her classroom newsletter, she tells me how she uses it to inform parents about what happened last month and what is going to happen in the coming month. She thinks it's a good way for parents to see what their child is learning, and if there is an upcoming field trip she mentions in the newsletter, parents can volunteer to come . In the center's newsletters, she mentions that she usually writes a short paragraph about what the class just completed or learned. For Friday invitations to parents, she sends home a letter stating the parents' upcoming events for the week. She writes in the note inviting parents to read to the class and come volunteer for field trips that week. She also mentions that she has an open door policy where parents are allowed to come watch her class whenever they want. In the morning and when the students arrive in their class, it is a good time to greet the parents. She says it helps create a bond with parents and if they have concerns, they can talk about it a little. In her class, her students are tested three times a year... in the middle of a piece of paper... and certain traditions that come with the holidays. For example, on Abraham Lincoln's birthday, she explained to her students what an important figure he was in history and she read them a story about Abraham Lincoln. She believes it is important for her class to have diversity. In the teachers' classroom, she mentions that the way she meets parents at conferences and open houses is through communication. For parent conferences, they are optional three times a year to review the student's progress in the class. She mentions that she sends a note to the parents and that she is available at a time that is most convenient for the parents. The open house is for pre-kindergarten students, but this year their goal is to host an open house for this class. Ultimately, she feels that she communicates very well with her parents about her student's progress..
