“On September 7, 1986, instant replay was used for the first time in an NFL regular season game” (Dudko). The use of instant replay in the National Football League helps officials determine where the ball is on the field. Umpires are not one hundred percent accurate in placing the ball in the correct spot where the runner is. Therefore, using replays helps determine the right location. Instant replays also help referees make the right call on the field to see if wide receivers are making legal catches. In Super Bowl XLIII, Santonio Holmes makes a historic catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers to win the game. To be caught, the wide receiver had to have both feet inbounds and control the ball. The referees clearly made an educated guess because the game moved so quickly that they could not determine with certainty the correct call on the field. Through the use of instant replay, officials concluded that the receiver was in fact in bounds and in control of the ball, allowing Santonio Holmes to score a touchdown and win the game for his team. Without instant replay, the officials would never have been able to make the right decision and the outcome of the match could have changed dramatically. Finally, some say that instant replay degrades the use of referees and will keep away “plots” in football. "I thought that by now there would be
