Can work dependence lead to death? Many people don't think of workaholics as dependent people. In an article by Ellen Goodman, she highlights a dark side of the life of a workaholic; “The Company Man” explains the life of Phil, a man who literally worked himself to death. He lost contact with his family, his social life and ultimately his life. The fifty-one year old man mentioned in Goodman's article was deeply involved in his work, he had no life other than his work, his work took up all his time, he had no real relationship with his wife or children. even his weekends were entirely devoted to his work. However, he got something out of all that time at work, he was vice president of the company he worked for. In his mind he was a hard worker, but in reality he was a workaholic. What is workaholism? Many people don't see work addiction as a problem and confuse it with working hard. The meaning of workaholism is when a person values work over any other activity, even if it negatively affects their health and family as well as the quality of their work. On the other hand, hardworking people find time to spend with their families and take care of their health and well-being. Although many people do not think that the workaholic poses a real danger to their lives; however, it can lead to: stress, poor health and overwork, but in reality, people work themselves to death. To identify workaholics, we must recognize work addiction: • Workaholics are always in a hurry and very busy • Workaholics play the control game of never asking for help • Nothing is ever perfect for workaholics • Work comes before everything else • Workaholics are restless and they have no social network...... middle of paper ...... only Phil did it Sans exercise, he also didn't have a good diet, he was always eating egg salad sandwiches at his desk. All of these ruined his health. Overwork is one of the main reasons that identify workaholics, Phil used to work all the time including weekends, and with a person like Phil who had a work addiction he would be considered like a type A. workaholic. All of Phil's problems are due to his overwork. In Goodman's article, she talks about his work habits: "He worked six days a week, five of them until eight or nine at night." As we can see, a workaholic that does not seem dangerous can lead to self-distraction problems. In summary, people should pay more attention to their environment and work habits, they should have enough rest and free time in order to avoid the dangers of workaholism..
