“No form of demonstration or political, religious or racial propaganda is permitted on Olympic venues, venues or other areas” (Advertising, demonstrations, propaganda* 98) . This rule shows exactly what the Germans were hoping for: a peaceful, passive, war-free environment in which countries can come together and compete. Although we all know that the 1972 Munich Olympics, between September 5 and 6, were quite the opposite. The Munich massacre, one of the worst massacres of all time, was motivated by revenge by the Palestinian group known as Black September, against the Israeli people or, more pertinently, against their Olympic team (Rosenberg) . Since this confrontation between Palestine and Israel has been going on for so long, the conflict was ultimately inevitable. Where was it? The tragedy of the 1972 Munich Olympics stunned the world with the killings of the Israeli Olympic team, but the fact that it could have been avoided is completely unacceptable. Tensions were very high during these Olympics, mainly because they were the first Olympic Games held. in Germany since the Nazis hosted the Games in 1936 (Rosenberg). Although for some, it will never be easy to forget the recent and frankly horrible past. Olympic Park had been built just six miles from Dachau Concentration Camp, one of the largest concentration camps ever created (Burnton). For Israel's 42 representatives, these Olympics had a deeper meaning than anything else. Israeli citizens, many of whom were Holocaust survivors themselves or their children, were returning to Germany.
