Essay / Adam and Eve - 1783
The qualities of women were evaluated and defined on the scale of servitude and passivity. A woman's character is directly linked to specific attributes like modesty, humility, chastity, temperance, and patience, to name a few. These distinctive quality traits describe someone who is powerless over decisions and respects them at all times. Renaissance women should be docile when speaking, never speaking in anger or arguing, nor should they be intelligent and witty. The devalued value of women was established long after Adam and Eve sinned together. The structure of marriage in the Renaissance era explicitly outlines the gender roles of husband and wife, and men and women. Marriage was seen as a dominant and authoritarian bond. According to the Bible, it is the duty of the husband to govern his wife in the obligations of marriage and to maintain her wisdom and judgment to remain worthy in the sight of God. Since marriage is a contract, the wife must accept control from her husband. If a woman marries, then she agrees and must comply with the total control of her husband. Authors Joseph Swetnam and Rachel Speght are on opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to the true purpose of women in 1615. In Swetnam's pamphlet, The Arraignment of Lewd Femmes, it is evident that his perception of women is obscured by his ego presumptions. Speght's pamphlet A Muzzle for Melastomus was written in direct response to Swetnam's anti-feminine diatribe, which condemned women as immoral and pathetically inadequate. Swetnam is a misogynist and Speght is a warrior. He composed four pamphlets of stupid concepts and illogical thoughts about the purpose of women's existence. In the pamphlet, Swetnam unjustifiably stated...... middle of paper...... the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. As Eve plucked the fruit from the tree, she offered some to Adam; he knew it was wrong because God had warned him of the consequences. For their disobedience to God after He explicitly told Adam to stop eating from the Tree, they experienced spiritual and physical death. So God expelled them from the Garden. Because they placed their sins above God, they entered the world with that sin on their shoulders. The luxurious life was no longer accessible to Adam and Eve, now they will experience suffrage as animals were now dangerous and carnivorous, women will experience pain during childbirth and thorns and weeds will choke your harvest making the plantation difficult and man will have to work to achieve it. eat. There was a small reference to the original sinner who disobeyed God's word, it was Satan and not Adam and Eve..
