  • Essay / Sociological Perspective Poverty - 1184

Women in society are poor and live in poverty because they are discriminated against in the workplace. They are often not offered the same positions as a male figure. As a result, they have to work for less while trying to support their children if they are not married. This discrimination comes from the fact that some believe that women are not capable of performing a job with the same skills as a man. Women are also forced to work part-time because they have children at home, and it is for this reason that the minimum wage should be increased so that a family can survive on this income. “A higher minimum wage will immediately reduce reliance on public assistance,” as Yarmuth states in his article (2015). Women would have higher wages, reducing the need for public services.
