Essay / Western Civilization: Robert Spencer Wells, Jr.
Robert Spencer Wells, Jr. In Western Civilization, it is interesting to note the differences between cultures to try to determine when women had a more advantageous. Many scholars may argue that the medieval period offered a better lifestyle for women, but take a closer look and see the benefits of women's lifestyle in the Roman era. The medieval period could be considered a better time for women, but Roman women enjoyed many more advantages for a better lifestyle. Women in the medieval period had a certain role with their husbands, depending on his social status. Wives were placed in a class based on their husband's industry or social status (Time Traveler's 54). This social status may be favorable, but not all wives managed to achieve elite social status. Once the woman was engaged and married to her husband, she was totally controlled by the latter. Even if the woman could maintain the same social status as her husband, she lost many rights after her marriage. Women in the medieval period not only lost many of their rights, but also became somewhat of a slave to their husbands in many ways. The sexual lifestyle of women in medieval times was very different between married and single women. Medieval women were not accurately informed about their sexual organs due to poor medical research. They believed they had to perform sexual acts regularly to preserve themselves. The third-century writer Galen was considered an authority on medical information on sexual activities. Galen stated that "a woman's womb was 'cold' and needed to be constantly warmed by 'hot' semen" (Time Traveler's 55). One might assume that these are times when women gathered simply to escape the home by attending religious events (Invisible Novels 84). These events would give women time to visit and maintain connections with other women while having the opportunity to develop their religious views. Women in medieval and Roman times both struggled with their daily lives. Roman women had a bit more freedoms in their lives compared to medieval women. It became clear that women in Roman times had a more social lifestyle than those in medieval times. The lifestyle of Roman women may not have been the best, but it was of better quality than that of the Middle Ages. Roman women had a more pleasant and less restricted lifestyle, which explains why they must have had a more desirable lifestyle between the two periods..
