  • Essay / Similarities and differences between the characters in...

The Sound and the Fury is a gripping story that shows different sides of a slowly deteriorating family. William Faulkner has pointed out that one of the most important aspects of this novel is the theme of loss. Faulkner gave the perspectives of four different individuals who all had one main obsession, their sister Caddy, who in some way symbolizes the loss each endures and the deterioration of the South. Caddy, who had no role in the novel to tell her side of the story, was viewed very differently by each of her brothers. This novel tells the story of the Compson family on the path to distinction. The story begins with Benjamin, who is mentally challenged, narrating the first section of the story; this is one of the most difficult chapters of the book which is very difficult to understand for the simple fact that Benjamin has no movement of time. He therefore constantly returns between the present and the past. In order to fully understand the chapter, you must slowly understand when it is talking about the past and when it is talking in the present. All his memories are linked to Caddy. She was the one who gave him the order. His life was based around Caddy because she was the mother figure in his life. She was the one who gave Benjamin the love he needed. There is a point in the novel where Luster was taking Benjamin and he started crying hysterically because Luster had taken him on an unknown route; Jason found out that he had hit Luster and told him to never do that again or he would kill him because Benjamin had lost the order he lived in. Without the familiarity of his surroundings, his life would have no meaning. The only thing left in his life are the memories he had with his sister. When Caddy ran away, Benjamin lost the order in his life and the love he needed. The second chapter was narrated by Quentin, which was much easier to understand than the first chapter and he tells his perspective on events that happened in his past that he hasn't really gotten over. Quentin had a close bond with his sister Caddy. Quentin cares about the old Southern code of honor.
