Essay / Analysis of the opening sequences of John Carpenter's Halloween (1978) and Wes Craven's Scream (1996). I'm going to analyze the opening sequence of Halloween (1978) and Scream (1996). I will report on the differences and similarities between the two films. To achieve this, I will examine the films' characters, narratives, cinematic language, organization, ideology, and target audience. In the opening of "Halloween", Michael Myer's sister was depicted as passive because she did not fight while in "Halloween". Scream', DrewBarrymore's character is not depicted as passive and fights and defends himself, almost getting away from the killer. Both characters in the films are also depicted as sexually active. In the opening of “Scream,” the rising popcorn slowly evokes tension. At first you don't expect it to be something scary, but it slowly builds up and grabs the audience's attention. Then the audience starts to realize that something is going to happen, and you start to feel sad for the character and hope that he can get away from the masked killer and survive. When she answers the phone for the first time, we don't think about it, and for the second time, but when she answers the third time and it's the same person, the audience becomes aware of some kind of danger . Additionally, the camera zooms in on Barrymore's face to also show tension and danger. In "Halloween", at the beginning, the camera starts with a POV shot of the house and then continues for the rest of the scene, fading the audience, making you think about who. is this person? Why are you here? Etc. There are also LS and MS showing the en-...... middle of paper ...... for adolescents and young adults. It's more unlikely to be suitable for younger teens as it has visual effects and swearing that are quite gruesome. The actors in both films are in their late teens and are young adults. The director of "Halloween" wasn't really well known and had only made one film before making this one, until he made this spectacular film, with such a low price. budget and most of it went to a semi-famous actor, which was John Pleasance. He got his publicity through word of mouth among teenagers. On the other hand, it was predicted that "Scream" would be a success, and it was. The director was well known for directing the horror film "Nightmare On Elm Street", and "Scream" had well-known actors such as: Neve Campbell and Drew Barrymore. It had a big budget and was spent on film and advertising, and grossed millions..
