Essay / A look at climate change - 963
“In the last 650,000 years alone, there have been seven cycles of glacier advance and retreat, the abrupt end of the last ice age ago approximately 7,000 years ago marking the beginning of the modern era. the era of climate and human civilization” (Jenkins). Whether or not climate change is real is the subject of much debate among scientists and politicians. In his article “Is Climate Change Real,” science and politics journalist Chris Mooney concludes that climate change skeptics are influenced by political beliefs and economic interests; Furthermore, science and politics are interconnected because the government provides funding for scientists to continue their research and use their findings to support their political beliefs. Bottum and Anderson, in their article “Unchanging Science,” describe climate change as cyclical and argue that there is no way to demonstrate this. In contrast, Sarah Laskow, in her article “Demystifying Green Living: Combating Climate Change Requires Lifestyle Changes, Not Organics,” argues that climate change is real and that to combat this problem, individuals will need to make changes to their lifestyle. The existence of climate change is supported by scientific evidence that shows it has gotten worse over the past century due to rising sea levels, human expansion of the greenhouse effect and economic interests; therefore, individuals, as well as the government, must take action to avoid further climate change-related disasters. The scientific evidence provided by the National Climatic Data Center and NASA showing sea level rise strongly authenticates that climate change is real; a device called “Argo Floats” measures the increase in temperature and salinity of ocean currents. (Jenkins). According to the middle of the paper, the value has been high over the past century due to rising sea levels, carbon emissions, human expansion of the greenhouse effect and political pressure. Opponents of climate change are politically pressured to believe that climate change is a cause of periodicity by hiding the scientific truth behind climate change. However, individuals, as well as the government, must take action to avoid further catastrophe due to climate change. The government should impose new environmental protection regulations and policies to regulate the reduction of carbon emissions and greenhouse effect caused by human activities. Specifically, in order to cap carbon emissions and reduce climate change, the government should adopt a cap-and-trade environmental policy to reward companies that use natural resources to produce electricity instead of fuels. broadcasts (Laskow, 342).
