Essay / Essay on the Metamorphosis - 843
The Metamorphosis is one of Franz Kafka's famous stories. The story is about a haunted man who turned into an insect. The author wrote the story based on various theories such as Marxism, existentialist and religious views. It is also a reflection of a hostile world whose major themes are abandonment, self-alienation and difficult relationships. It reveals the struggles of people in modern society where everyone is neglected in their time of need (Franz 8). The cultural and social setting of the story helps support the major themes of the story. Since the story is dramatic fiction, it is necessary to explore the style of interior monologue in order to inform the audience of what the protagonist is thinking. Samsa's thoughts emphasize “this town is full of hatred and hostility, especially when my parents abandon me and treat me badly. It is a shame that the economic status of some people in the city makes it difficult for them to integrate into society. I imagine that the historical, cultural and social context of the story is based on a menacing creature. I believe that my role in society is based on historical processes that I am unaware of. I believe that ethnic tensions between three groups: Jews, Czechs and Germans affect societal processes.” Samsa seems to present the civilizing context of the story by drawing inspiration from its cultural origin. Samsa seems to state that his setting is a city with many cultural events. Samsa assumes in his mind that “these cultural institutions and processes influence my ideologies and way of thinking.” Samsa seems to indicate that the economic events and social life of the family members were influenced by the historical events that took place in the village.... .. middle of paper ...... still thinks, " the difficult relationships between people represent the effect of capitalism brought by industrialization to the city. I believe people care more about improving their financial situation without worrying about its effects on others. For example, my father doesn't care what I'm going through as long as he earns money for the family.” Samsa ultimately assumes that his father's hostility toward him demonstrates a lack of appreciation for his money. The major themes of Franz's story were inspired by cultural and historical events in Prague, the author's city. The city was full of hostility caused by people's economic status and differences in cultural background. The story is told using the styles of inner monologue. It focuses on the main character's thoughts and feelings which support the themes of abandonment and difficult relationships..
