Essay / Gerald Graff does not like books Summary - 730
He is too quick to dismiss the idea of reading for oneself to find meaning and think critically about a book. For him, Graff states that "it was by being exposed to such critical reading and discussions for a period of time that I caught the literature bug." (26) Although this may have worked for Graff, not all students will “experience a personal reaction” (27) through the use of critical discussion. The solution to this problem does not seem to be to give answers or lazily do assigned readings in order to find meaning in the text. The student needs a healthy mix of assigned reading and in-class help. This is vital to a student's education. He should be challenged to reach conclusions on his own, but he should also not be left in the dark if he did not get what was asked of him. However, these “wrong answers” proposed by the student should not be discouraged so quickly.
