Pathos or emotional appeal is about making the audience feel what they feel or feel like they do. King is not blind to the abuse and prejudice his people suffered, because he too suffered. He also knows that some have just come out of cramped cells and others come from areas where their quest for freedom has left them battered by the storms of persecution and reeling from the brutal winds of police. (King 853) He understands and sympathizes with the audience regarding the injustice with which they are treated. “I tell you today, my friends, that despite the difficulties and frustrations of the moment, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal. » (King 853-854) King shows the audience that he believes he deserves to be free, that he deserves to be treated equally, and that he deserves to be known as 'individual. He makes his audience feel like his dream is their dream
