  • Essay / The Phenomenal Discovery of Vitamins and Citrus Fruits

AntiquityDuring ancient times, between 3300 BCE and 100 CE, many things were established, for example municipalities and continuous cultivation. In Sumaria (in modern-day Iraq), it was discovered that food not only keeps human beings alive, but has an immense impact on people's health. This was an introductory concept that influenced the discovery of vitamins in general. But this notion was probably already known to even older medical experts, then called shamans (Jacks, 2007). But in Sumeria and many other regions this idea was studied in more detail. Their information was recorded in a writing system called cuneiform, which incorporated different writing styles; logo syllabic, syllabic and alphabetic scripts (Ancient Scripts, 2012). In 2012, Ancient Scripts stated that this method had been used for the longest period of time in history. The information was written on clay tablets, called clay tokens, shown in Figure 1.0. There is still evidence of this type of scenario, but the majority of the effort devoted to vitamins is nowhere to be found today (Jacks, 2007). They have been demolished over time or are still obscured. Additionally, in ancient Egypt, certain foods were identified to improve health and recommended to the population. By the 1500s BC, humans were already using fruits to treat health conditions like scurvy, which was named thousands of years later. The word scorbutus is derived from the Latin term scorbutus (Scurvy Site, 2014). This disease has affected humans since prehistoric times. It is caused by insufficient vitamin C and is common in people who do not have a diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. Symptoms of scurvy include: loss of hunger, diarrhea, respiratory complications... middle of paper ...... having difficulty functioning which can eventually lead to heart attacks or other problems (vitamin C function, 2014). Vitamin C is produced in most living animals, except humans, primates and guinea pigs, which is why they can get scurvy. Other animals, like dogs and cats, are able to synthesize their own vitamin C. But humans cannot do this because there is a mutation on the l-gulonolactone oxidase gene, so vitamin C does not cannot be produced. Ascorbic acid is an extremely vital element that is present in many fruits and vegetables, such as oranges, lemons, tomatoes, broccoli, etc. But because it breaks down easily in the presence of heat, it can be lost during cooking. This is why most foods contain vitamin C. The recommended daily amount of vitamin C for adults is between 75 mg and 90 mg. However, taking too much vitamin C can be harmful..
