Essay / Obesity among college students - 1314
In America, obesity affects at least one third of the adult population. This in itself is important, but obesity also leads to other diseases that could be detrimental to individuals, such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and certain types of cancer. These deaths are ones that could be avoided if people paid more attention to their diet, exercise and weight. Unhealthy changes: Consumption of sugars, soft drinks, cheese, cream, and fats and oils has increased. » (Sarafino 197). These unhealthy changes have been noticed especially among students who attend college as they are away from home, leading to poor diet. Many people are self-conscious about their weight “during childhood and adolescence, particularly if they are overweight and if they are teased and excluded from social groups (Rosen, 2002; Zeller and Modi, 2008). (Sarafino 201). In this case, people who are overweight or have risk factors for obesity should be more careful in their weight control and diet. If a person's BMI is close to 25 or higher, they will be considered overweight or obese if they exceed 30. (Sarafino 201). Many factors come into play if one is obese; such as biological and psychosocial factors. Exercise is one of the most important parts of weight control. “One of its benefits is that it increases metabolism, thereby helping the body burn calories.” (Sarafino 209). Since obesity is still a problem today, more susceptible people should pay more attention to their nutrient intake, how they control their weight, and engage in daily physical activity. The quality of life we live largely depends on what we eat. . For this reason, it is essential to ensure that we get the right quality and quantity of nutrients: carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals and fiber (which are not minerals but are necessary for digestion). All of these can be obtained from our diet, from the foods we eat. However, in recent times, managing to consume adequate nutrition seems to be a challenge for many university and college students. As a result, nutrition is one of the many causal factors that play an important role in their obesity and overweight problems. During the research it was discovered many study articles carried out on the nutrition of university students - what they eat, don't eat but should eat and the factors that contribute to it and how this relates to the obesity among them..
