History, geography and demographyThe Republic of Singapore is a sovereign republic located on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, between Malaysia and Indonesia. Singapore's history dates back to 1298-1299 AD, known as Temasek ("Sea Town"). Modern Singapore was founded in the 19th century. On 9 August 1965, Singapore left the Federation of Malaysia and gained independence as the Republic of Singapore. Singapore has a total area of 697 km2, of which 687 km2 is land and 10 km2 is water. The country consists of 63 islands and the largest offshore island is Pulau Tekong (2,442.6 ha). Singapore's public green spaces exceed 9,500 ha, or approximately 13.6% of Singapore's total land area. Singapore's climate is hot and humid, and because Singapore is almost close to the equator, there are no distinct seasons. The temperature is stable throughout the year, with an average high temperature of 87.8°F and an average low temperature of 75.4°F. The hottest weather occurs in April and its average humidity is 84.1%. Singapore is a relatively small country and has limited natural resources. Notable natural resources include fish and deep-water ports. In 2012, the total population of Singapore was 5,312,400, of which 3,818,200 were Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The ethnic composition includes 74.2% Chinese, 13.3% Malay, 9.2% Indian and 3.3% others. Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil. English is widely used in business, government and schools. Economy, political environment and culture In 2012, Singapore's GDP was approximately $346.5 billion.
