“And Abraham said: Because I thought: The fear of God is surely not in this place; and they will kill me because of my wife. (Gen. 20:11) God breathed the word “fear” into His written word 509 times. The authors of the text recorded "Fear of the Lord" 30 times, while the term "Fear of God" was recorded eight times. There are many words used in the Bible to define the word fear. “The most common of these (giving the noun forms) are Heb. yir'â, “reverence”; Heb. paḥaḏ, fear', 'fear'; THANKS. phobos, “fear”, “terror”. » The New Bible Dictionary uses the word fear as holy fear. “To fear God is to regard God with reverent fear.” Genesis 20:11 is representative of this use of the word fear. Abraham foresaw that he would not be safe in the land of Gerar, located between Kadesh and Shur. His reasoning was that the inhabitants of this country did not know the living God of the Hebrews; therefore, they had no respect for Him. Without reverence for God, the people of these countries would certainly not have reflected on the moral implications of such nefarious acts of murder, rape and pillage. These heinous acts would have been nothing more than customary behavior. We can also say that because the people of the land did not revere Jehovah, they also did not fear his mighty hand of judgment. This type of fear would be better interpreted as fright or terror. Fear, that is, terror or servile fear, is also found in Second Chronicles 20:29. There we read: “And the fear of God was upon all the kingdoms of these countries, when they learned that the Lord fought against the enemies of Israel. This fear is a joint characteristic of unconverted people who live according to paganism and annalistic philosophies...... middle of paper ...... even those who bow down to Him, Scripture tells us "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is patient toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance (Second Peter 3:9). Bible, however, fear is perhaps more often seen than in popular culture, not as a pure emotion but as a wise behavior » Those who fear God and seek wisdom early will find it. safe and at ease without fear of evil. Those who fear God will walk with Him and will not follow the paths of the unrighteous. God will provide for all the needs of those who fear Him. The fear of the Lord will bring us wisdom and knowledge. we grow spiritually into the image of Christ. Our desire will be for the things of God and his righteousness and his flesh will be crucified.
